What are Secondaries? Standard Vs. Extra Stock Spring Options

At Stock Spring Catalog we have thousands and thousands of springs in stock, from compression to torsion and extension, we carry over 30,000 different stock spring designs for you to choose from. So, if you are looking for a replacement spring, need a spring for your device or machine, are in the prototyping stage and/or manufacturing your product we have what you need. Still, we understand that sometimes you need a little more than just a standard spring for the job. That is why we also offer secondaries as an option for most of the stock springs we carry.

What are Secondaries?

Secondaries are the customization options we offer which can be applied to a standard stock spring in order to enhance, improve, or slightly modify a spring after it has been manufactured. There are different types of secondaries. Some secondaries are completed by us in the factory while others need to be applied externally through a trusted third party company.

Standard Secondary Process

There is a standard secondary process that all springs pass through which is called heat treating. Unlike all other secondary processes heat-treating has no additional cost. Heat-treating relieves the spring of stress by having it undergo through a strong heat process which provides the necessary resilience for the spring. There are also some non-standard secondary processes. Non-standard secondary processes are available per request and offered at an additional cost.

Extra Secondaries That We Can Complete

OOnly a few secondaries are completed by our team, using our equipment (in-house). Some of the in-house secondaries we complete are: the mandatory heat treating, standard grinding, hooks, bends and certain cuts. Grinding is another standard measure that is widely requested for compression springs. When the spring is grounded, what we mean is that the ends on such springs are grounded (slightly trimmed and little rough) so that the spring can stand over a flat surface, allowing it to have better grip and stability. Other extra secondaries that can be done in-house by us include: creating cross over or machine hooks on extension springs, presetting on compression springs and/or torque presetting on torsion springs, and bends on torsion spring legs. The bends on torsion springs can be done on both legs or one leg, as long as the stock spring has enough leg length to properly complete this.

Extra Secondaries Completed by Third-Parties

Some secondaries such as plating, passivation, and shot peening are performed by third parties. When you order from StockSpringsCatalog.com we offer plating and passivation at an additional cost but these need to be requested, and agreed upon by email or phone upon purchase. Most of these secondaries are completed out of house but we have the proper connections to do so however we do not offer shot peening and/or powder coating. This secondary is normally requested for heavier, more Industrial type springs, and we do not handle many springs like those.

Some plating options we offer are zinc, gold zinc, nickel, and black oxide. In some rare cases we can also do gold plating. Passivation is a process that gets your spring cleaned thoroughly so that it can be used in food grade applications and medical devices. This is also available for our stock stainless steel springs per request.
